500 Days of Hummel

This is a story of three boys. 

The first boy, Kurt Hummel of Lima Ohio, believed that his life wouldn't really be complete until he found true love. This belief was cemented by the need to fill the void left by his mother's passing and long hours listening to over romanticized love ballads in musical soundtracks.

The second boy, Blaine Warbler of Westerville Ohio, did not share this belief. He was entranced by the idea of love, but didn't rely on the concept that one handsome boy could make him whole again. Since the rejection by his father the day he revealed his true self, he cared about only two things most. His position of lead singer of the Warblers... and the amazement of how detached he felt as his performances ended.

The final boy, David Karofsky also of Lima Ohio, had no solid notion of love he could commit to. He had more pressing concerns, such as maintaining the pride his family had kept with him all through his pre-teen years and creating enough status to prevent another esteem crushing betrayal. David assumed that no one would ever really care for him either way, so he supposed that when "it" came – whatever "it" truly was – he would take whatever life would have given him, simple as that.

Kurt meets Blaine on November 9th in the Dalton Academy grand foyer during his junior year of high school on a mission to spy on the school's prestigious show choir. The two are delighted with each other's company, but for different reasons entirely.

Kurt falls in love with Blaine, captivated by his cheerful demeanor and entranced with the sense of comfort he feels with the other boy; who seems to understand him so completely in a way others didn't.

Blaine is happily surprised to see that there is another boy not unlike himself. He thinks to himself, as he sings halfway to Kurt in a goofy welcome of sorts, that he would love to be friends with the new student who claims to have forgotten his uniform.

David meets Kurt on October 4th in one of William McKinley High School's hallways during freshman year as Kurt stops at his locker to retrieve a science report he needs for the next period. The meeting is hardly the stuff of romance.

Kurt doesn't even see David; he scoops the assignment into his backpack, fixes his hair, and walks to class while musing about the black girl in English with the designer print shirt. He remembers her name sounds like a luxury car, but he can't quite remember it right. The only memory he may hold of David is bumping into a large boy in a green polo shirt and vaguely apologizing.

All David sees in that moment is Kurt. He stops dead at the astronomy classroom door and feels rooted to the spot as his eyes cling to the young boy. An unknown sensation bubbles up in the well of his chest and though he tries as hard as he can, he can't for the life of him place the name, but he can still feel it after the young man bumps into him mumbling "sorry". David stays where he is and as Kurt runs into him, the scent of how orange cremesicles taste wafts around his head. For the rest of the day, he is a dreamy eyed teddy bear until the full weight of his own emotions comes crashing down. Someone yells "fag" at another person and David jolts, thinking it's him they are calling out; forever shattering the dream.

This is a story about the three young men I have introduced you to and what happens to each of them overtime.

You should know up front, this is not a love story.
